Do I need a car cover? Why car covers are worth the investment

When you are in the market for a car cover, there are various options and factors to consider. You may find yourself stuck deciding which type of car cover you should buy.

Should you get a custom fit car cover or universal car cover? Indoor car cover or Outdoor car cover? Which specific fabrics will protect your car the best?

At Beverly Hills Motoring Accessories, our mission is to provide luxury car owners with the best products for their vehicles. As car enthusiasts ourselves, we're here to help you make the best choice for your vehicle.

Today, we are diving into some of the most frequently asked questions regarding car covers, in order to help you find the perfect car cover for your vehicle.

1. Do I need a car cover if my vehicle sits in my garage?

Yes. Using a car cover will keep your vehicle much cleaner and save you a lot of time and money on washings. No matter where you live - any city or country - your car will get very dusty without a car cover, even in your garage.

2. My car sits outside while I am at work during the day. Do I need to use a car cover?

Definitely. Prolonged sun exposure will damage your vehicle’s paint, seats and dash more than virtually any other element. In order to preserve the value and condition of your vehicle, it is critical to use a car cover.

3. What specifically does a car cover protect against?

Your car’s biggest enemies are the sun, tree sap, animal deposits, and other chemical fallout. A car cover will keep your paint from fading and scratching, your interior from discoloring and cracking, and vinyl and convertible tops from disintegrating. A car cover will also protect your car from getting dirty and wet during rainy and snowy seasons.

A car cover is also a deterrent that helps keep your vehicle safe from car thieves by keeping the contents inside your vehicle out of plain sight.  If a thief wants to steal your car, the extra time to remove your car cover can be the difference of them getting caught or not. With so many other uncovered cars, your vehicle is much less likely to be meddled with than another vehicle without a car cover.

4. What is the difference between a custom-fit car cover and a universal fit car cover?

A true, custom-fit car cover is made by taking precise measurements of each and every curve on your vehicle. This ensures that your car cover provides maximum coverage and protection for your car - and your car cover won’t blow off your vehicle from the wind. They also look much better, too.

Many companies sell universal, ill-fitting covers at cheaper prices. Don’t be fooled - these universal covers are made with inferior fabrics that quickly deteriorate, don’t fit your vehicle properly, and many times blow away with just a little bit of wind. Save yourself the hassle and money by purchasing a high quality cover - rather than getting caught up in the cycle of buying a cheap cover every year. In the long run, we believe it pays to buy quality.

5. What’s the difference between an Indoor Car Cover and an Outdoor Car Cover?

Simply put, if you store your car inside the garage 100% of the time, you are going to want to buy an indoor car cover. Our FlannelGuard Supreme Indoor Car Cover is lined with 100% soft cotton sheared into a soft fleece that pampers your vehicle’s paint. It’s so soft you could even sleep in it! The outside of the cover features a unique mix of spandex and lycra to hug your vehicle’s every contour and curve. It’s important that your car cover fits perfectly to allow maximum protection for every inch of your vehicle.

Indoor car covers provide an exceptionally soft touch to your precious car. They are made specifically to pamper the paint, protect from dings, and keep dust off of your car between each wash and drive. Each time you pull your cover off of your car you will be proud to drive it as is, right away.

However, if your car sits outdoors even some of the time, you are going to want to buy an outdoor car cover. Outdoor car cover fabrics are made specifically to protect your vehicle against the harsh elements. These fabrics are designed to shed water, protect your car from snow, tree sap, bird droppings, and most importantly - hold up for long periods in the sun. UV-rays can be one of the most damaging things to your vehicle - and it is much better to let the car cover take the beating than your car itself!

6. My car sits outside so I thought I wanted a waterproof cover, but people have said that a waterproof cover can harm your paint. What’s the story on that?

According to Consumer Reports, it’s worth spending a little more to get a car cover that’s lined with a soft material so that it doesn’t scratch your paint. You’ll want one that can breathe so that moisture doesn’t build up.

When looking for any car cover, you want to ensure the fabric is breathable - which allows moisture that can get trapped underneath the cover to evaporate through the fabric, ensuring that your paint’s protection. This is why we list our Outdoor covers as “water-resistant” and breathable, not “waterproof”. A fully waterproof cover can be detrimental to your paint job.

7. So which car cover do you recommend if my car sits outside?

It depends on where you live. All of our outdoor fabrics protect against all of the elements - shedding water with ease and protect against the harmful sun. However, our UltraGuard fabric carries a slight advantage and is the best material to protect your car during periods of prolonged sun exposure. We recommend our UltraGuard car cover for people who live and drive in Sunny States like California, Florida and Texas. Our WeatherGuard is our most water resistant fabric. We recommend it for people who live and drive in climates with heavy rain or snow.

8. How do I take care of my car cover?

When you receive your BHMA Car Cover, you will receive specific washing instructions for your individual fabric. However, for most fabrics, simply wash your car cover in your home washing machine and dry it in the dryer. Frequent washings extend the life of the cover.

9. How long will my car cover last?

It depends on the use. If your car is always inside or out of the direct sunlight, your car cover can last indefinitely. We have customers who purchased their car covers from us over 40 years ago and their covers are still is in great shape! That is the beauty of purchasing a high quality cover from Beverly Hills Motoring.

Sitting outdoors, your car cover should last at least 4 or 5 years - depending on how much sunlight your car gets. The idea is for the cover to take the brunt of the elements rather than your car.

10. Anything else I should know?
